River Gallery has re-located
After 10 wonderful years in The Strand, we have transferred our operations to a beautiful gallery in the Chindwin Chambers – a small heritage building in 38th Street just three minutes walk from our old location.
Although we miss our gallery at The Strand, we have twice the space in our elegant new premises, so you can see works from the full range of Myanmar’s finest contemporary artists. We also have more space for events, so if you’re looking for an original venue for your function, come and check us out.
River Gallery celebrates its 10th anniversary
At the beginning of 2016, River celebrated its first decade with a special exhibition of gallery artists and an anniversary party. See more about this milestone celebration in our Exhibitions section (here).
The Gallery was originally set up in 2006 by Gill Pattison, a New Zealander resident in Yangon since 2002. "My aim was to showcase Myanmar's talented contemporary artists who were very little known at that time. Life for an artist was difficult; they were almost completely isolated from the global art scene and they struggled under a heavy censorship regime. But I felt strongly that these talented individuals deserved better representation and exposure to a wider market.”
Ten years on, the country has opened its doors to the outside world and the Myanmar art scene is blossoming, as artists enjoy unprecedented freedoms. River Gallery is still the leading art space in the country, giving visitors the chance to view an unrivalled range of the best contemporary art that Myanmar has to offer. With over 40 leading and emerging artists represented, visitors can sample the many different styles, subjects and media used by Myanmar artists to express their individual vision. Each year, River organizes a series of shows abroad for its artists – partnering with overseas galleries for both group shows of Myanmar artists and solo exhibitions for the more established talents.
Visit our Artists section to see images of all the works currently available; the Exhibitions section to find details of current and past shows in Myanmar and abroad; and the News and Views section to learn more about gallery happenings and the Myanmar art scene.
Welcome to the world of Myanmar contemporary art - we hope you enjoy your visit with us.
